Fever 1793
by Laurie Halse Anderson
Engaging historical fiction from the author of Speak.
The Dark-Thirty
by Patricia McKissack
Ghost stories from the African-American tradition, neat concept but maybe not spooky enough.
Number the Stars
by Lois Lowry
Somehow I hadn't read this before; it's good for younger kids.
One of those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies
by Sonya Sones
Free verse YA with humor; exceedingly quick.
Whittington
by Alan Armstrong
For me, too many concepts stuffed together: historical fiction/folklore, animal talking fantasy and sappy school success story. But it does have rats, even if many of them are eaten by the cats in the book.
The Hello, Goodbye Window written by Norton Juster, illustrated by Chris Raschka
It won the Caldecott, I like Raschka although I don't think it's his neatest stuff.
Crispin: The Cross of Lead
by Avi
Kind of blah historical fiction.
