I was flipping about many television channels during a sleepy afternoon, stopping at many of the digital ones I don't get at home. I came across an episode of
Captain Pugwash, a somewhat recent PBS sanctioned version, it seemed. I recollected having a Captain Pugwash book when I was very young and in the UK so I did some internetting. Turns out their used to be a BBC cartoon. Also Captain Pugwash was libeled in the Guardian back in 1991.
Rumors about Captain Pugwash are inaccurate.
Creator
John Ryan got some damages in the court case and is still drawing the Captain, available
for a few hundred quid. (picture below) I don't think the PBS version is still in production, but I could be wrong.
Here is Captain Pugwash on WikipediaI also came across
the website of the Centre for the Study of Cartoons and Caricature. "The Centre was established in 1973 at the University of Kent at Canterbury, United Kingdom, to collect and preserve British cartoons of social and political comment, and make them freely available for study."
