Here They Come

This past weekend, I read a few books. The one that stands out is Here They Come by Yannick Murphy. This was a quick read starting with the profanity peppered first few lines. The narrator, a high school girl who must be younger than she seems, tells about the struggles of a lower east side family in the 70s. She speaks of her father and "his slut", then the father disappears, the brother is suicidal throughout, so dysfunctional is the order of things. But the voice through which the book continues stands out and is memorable. The second really enjoyable book I've picked up through the Mcsweeneys book release series. Neat endpapers too.

I finished Here They Come and I just can't shut up about how good it is. McSweeney's is really doing something right. People of Paper was fantastic, The Facts of Winter was strangely haunting, Here They Come was beautifully lyrical, and the new one, Icelander--I'm only about halfway through, but it's possibly the most amazing of all. I wish everyone knew about McSweeney's.
