in brooklyn, Basquiat and Robyn Hitchcock

Yesterday we ventured to Brooklyn. First we went to the Brooklyn Museum to see the current Basquiat exhibit.

Here are some Baquiat links. site 1 and site 2.

There was a recent Time magazine article.

Apparently there was a movie about Basquiat, including David Bowie as Andy Warhol.

Basquiat reminded me of Spanish Harlem's James De La Vega, who likes to paint and chalk all kinds of things. There does not appear to be any delavega website, but here are some articles:

After dinner we went over to Southpaw to see Robyn Hitchcock. As we waited on line to get in (surprisingly the line reached around the block), Mr. Hitchcock came out to solicit requests. As the show itself was request driven, there was some degree of fanboy annoyingness in the obscurity of some of the set choices. If I had drawn up the setlist, there probably would have been an overlap of only one or two songs, but considering that the performance was over 90 minutes and was enjoyable, this just speaks to the volume of intriguing work that RH has put out. the presence of Deni Bonet (who always turns up at these NY area gigs) on violin was mixed; for me, she somewhat overstayed her welcome, as the absence of any instrumentation besides guitar and harmonica didn't give enough of a setting for the violin to properly fall into.

In other news, the NY Times has discovered that there are a bunch of indie rock bands that cover each other. They cited a bunch of cd's from 2002 and 2003, so that's not really news, is it?
