at the cinema, or seeing the pictures

Were you to ask me to name favorite films, I would include The Graduate, The Manchurian Candidate, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Zero Effect and something else that rotates.....

Last night we saw the film Garden State. It has nothing to do with the Rick Moody novel of the same name. The film was a kind of depressing examination of suburbia. The New York Times suggests that the movie was referencing and attempting to update The Graduate. Sorry, didn't work out. Zack Braff supposedly wrote, directed and starred in this movie. It would have been a bit better if some other people had been there to fix various issues with the script, direction and acting. Oh well. Danny Devito produced it; I guess Mr. Braff impressed him a little too much. There was a little too over the top Shins plug, as well. Wonder if they'll regret that later.

Yet I am still looking forward to the Jonathan Demme remake of the Manchuarian Candidate. Music related content: the wonderful Robyn Hitchcock apparently has a cameo in this movie. Demme earlier made Storefront Hitchcock, as well as Stop Making Sense, two nifty concert films.
